How To Sell Your Speed Boat - A Step-By-Step Guide

Selling a speed boat may seem complicated, but with the right knowledge and platform, the experience can be made smoother and more profitable. In this article we take a look at the prerequisites for a speed boat sale, describe which documents are useful, talk about setting a fair price, give advice on how to write an advert, and finally describe how you can use Boat Peak to publish your own advert for free.

1. Assess Your Speed Boat's Condition

First things first, it's advisable to check and assess the condition of your speed boat. Doing so lets you spot any issues that a potential buyer may also spot when viewing your boat. A thorough inspection also gives you the opportunity to repair any issues and also lets you come up with a fair price. We advise that the following be checked:

  • Hull: Checking the hull for cracks and scratches is a must. It's also good practice to remove any barnacles, algae and mud in order to create a good impression for any prospective buyers.
  • Engine: Ensure that the engine is well lubricated and runs smoothly. Potential buyers will be interested in how well maintained the outboard is, particularly over the winter.
  • Electronics: Ensure that any electronics (e.g. navigation equipment, radios, etc.) are in working order.
  • Interior: Inspect the seat/side upholstery and the carpet. Boats with intact upholstery tend to go for much more money.
  • Fire Extinguisher: Ensure that the fire extinguisher is present and in date.

2. Documentation

It can be very beneficial during the selling process to keep all documents in one place. These documents might include the previous bill of sale, previous ownership records, boat registration details, insurance, proof of any tax paid, any safety certificates, RCD (Recreational Craft Directive) documentation (if applicable), the owner's manual, etc.

3. Set a Fair Price

Choosing a suitable price for your speed boat is a vital step in the process. Setting the price too high will almost certainly put off prospective buyers, whereas setting it too low will chip into any profit you might otherwise have had.

Our best advice is to find speed boats with a similar age, make, model and condition, and judge based on that. Bear in mind that boats do depreciate in value over time (although not to the same degree as cars do).

4. Write Your Advert

Writing a successful advert can be a challenge. It's important to clearly state as much information as possible, whilst also highlighting your boat's best features. We advise including the following points:

  • Exterior / Hull: Make sure to include details of your speed boat's measurements, including its width and length. Also briefly describe how well the speed boat handles in various conditions, how stable it is generally, etc. Include its seating capacity too.
  • Engine: Describing the make/model of the engine as well as its horsepower is essential to attracting prospective buyers. Mentioning how fuel efficient the boat is can also be helpful.
  • Electronics: A good set of electronics will encourage buyers. Describe what your boat has, even if it's just a basic radio system.
  • Safety Features: If the boat comes with any safety features (even just a fire extinguisher), be sure to mention them.
  • Storage: People looking for a speed boat are often interested in bringing along plenty of gear with them. Describe to them how much storage space your speed boat has.
  • Trailer: Describe your boat's trailer. Explain its condition and whether it is galvanised to protect against rust.
  • Custom Features: If your speed boat has been customised, be sure to include details.
